Your phone fell in a gutter, or someone snatched it on a keke, and now you need another one this week. You live in Benin City. You have three real choices: a roadside seller, a proper phone shop in town, or ordering online and waiting for delivery. Any of them can work. Any of them can also leave you with a fake, a locked phone or a battery that is finished by noon.
Let me be straight with you first. Vanfleek does not have a shop in Benin. Our only physical shop is Vanfleek Shop 51 in Auchi, Edo State. If you order from Benin City, we deliver to you. So this is not a "come and see us" article. It is how I would buy a phone in Benin myself, no matter who I bought it from.
Buying from street sellers
This is the cheapest and fastest route. You see the phone, you price it, you pay, you go. For a simple backup phone, some people are happy with that.
The problem is what happens after. There is usually no receipt and no way to find the seller again. Common wahala includes:
- Phones that are stolen and later get blocked
- iPhones still tied to someone else's Apple ID
- Android phones with a Google account lock after reset
- Original casing with cheap screens or batteries inside
- Old refurbished phones sold as brand new
If you still go this way, test everything on the spot, check the IMEI on the box matches the phone, and never pay to a stranger's account before you hold the phone in your hand.
Buying from a phone shop in town
A shop with a fixed address is safer than a roadside deal. You can touch the phone, test it, and walk back in if something goes wrong. Many traders in Benin are honest and know their stock well.
But a shop is not a guarantee. In busy Computer Village style markets, one stand may sell originals while the next sells copies with the same branding. Before you pay, ask for:
- A written receipt with the shop name, phone number and the phone's IMEI
- What the warranty covers, written down
- What happens if the phone develops a fault next week
If the seller gets vague or annoyed when you ask these, take that as your answer.
Buying online and having it delivered
Online, you can compare prices from your bed without spending transport money moving from stand to stand. The price is on the page, so nobody is sizing you up before naming a figure.
The downside is real. You cannot hold the phone before you order, you wait for delivery, and you pay a delivery fee. With Vanfleek, standard delivery is currently ₦3,500 for eligible orders. It varies by items and destination, and the amount you see at checkout is final. Our delivery page has the details.
Payment matters here too. On Vanfleek you can pay by card through Paystack, by bank transfer, with store balance or a gift card, or pay on delivery where your order is eligible. If you are nervous about paying before you see the phone, check at checkout whether pay on delivery is available for your order.
Quick comparison
| Where | Good side | Bad side |
|---|---|---|
| Street seller | Fast, cheap, room to price | No receipt, high risk of locked or stolen phones |
| Phone shop | You test before paying, you can go back | Quality depends on the trader, copies mixed with originals |
| Online with delivery | Clear prices, written return policy | You wait, you pay delivery, you cannot touch it first |
Decide your budget before you shop
Settle your figure at home, not in front of a smiling seller. Here are a few phones from our list at different budgets:
- Just calls and long battery for NEPA days: itel it5627 Feature Phone at ₦40,500
- A solid everyday Android: Infinix Hot 70 128GB at ₦230,000
- A first iPhone on a tighter budget: Apple iPhone 12 64GB at ₦255,000
- Strong camera and battery: Tecno Camon 50 at ₦502,000
- Top end Android: Samsung Galaxy S24 256GB at ₦890,000
Keep a little money aside for a case, a screen guard and a good charger. A cheap charger can damage a new phone faster than you think.
How to test a phone when it arrives
This part is the same whether the phone came from a stand, a shop or a delivery rider. Do it before you settle into using the phone. If it is a delivery, record a short video as you open the package.
- Check the box and seal. If it was sold as sealed, the seal should be intact. Note any damage to the package.
- Match the IMEI. Dial *#06# and compare the number with the one on the box. They should match.
- Look at the screen. Open a white page and a dark page. Check for dead spots, lines, yellow patches or ghost touches.
- Test both cameras. Take a photo and a short video with front and back cameras. Check the flash.
- Make a call. Put in your SIM, call someone, and confirm both of you hear clearly. Try loudspeaker.
- Test charging. Plug it in and make sure it starts charging. Wiggle the cable gently to check the port is firm.
- Check buttons and sensors. Volume, power, fingerprint or Face ID, vibration.
- Connect to data or Wi-Fi. Open a web page. Confirm the phone picks your network without asking for an unlock code.
Extra checks for iPhones
Go to Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health and see what it says. Then go to Settings and tap the name at the top. If someone else's Apple ID is there, stop. A phone locked to another person's account is a problem you do not want.
Extra checks for Android
Go to Settings, then Accounts, and make sure no old Google account is signed in. Check storage and RAM in Settings match what you paid for. For more ways to spot copies, read our guide on how to check if a phone is original.
If something is wrong after delivery
Do not wait and hope it fixes itself. With Vanfleek, you have 7 days from delivery to return. If the item is faulty, we pay for the return. If you simply changed your mind, the item must still be sealed and you pay the shipping. The full rules are on our returns page.
Keep the box, the receipt or order details, and your unboxing video. They make any complaint simple, with us or with anyone else.
If you are in Auchi or close to it and prefer to collect in person, see our guide on where to buy phones in Auchi. For Benin City, call or WhatsApp us on 08166749367 before you order if you want to ask about a phone, delivery to your area, or whether pay on delivery is available for you.
Prices were checked in November 2026 and can change. The product page always shows today's price.
