This guide was first published in September 2025. Tax rules and deadlines change, so check the Joint Tax Board website for the latest requirements.

HOW TO GET YOUR TAX IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (TIN) BY YOURSELF

On your Android or iPhone or Tablet, head to the Play Store or Apple App Store to download the JTB (Joint Tax Board) App.

Please ensure you are using the official store as using a third party store can lead to personal info theft

In the app, select:

  • Individual TIN Registration for a personal TIN
  • Non-individual TIN Registration for a business TIN (you'll need CAC for this).

Enter:

  1. Your BVN
  2. Date of birth
  3. First and last names
  4. Other required details
  5. Active email address.

*Ensure to cross-check all information before you submit....

You'll get your TIN via an email in the form of a PDF certificate after a few minutes or days depending on some factors.

You can also get your TIN  by accessing the JTB website on your browser and following the registration steps listed ealier.

You'll likely get your TIN certificate in your email within 24 - 72 hours at most.

If you've got a bank account in Nigeria or plan to open one soon, you'll need a TIN to operate it starting January 1st, 2026. So you should get this done as soon as possible.
