Eau de Parfum vs Eau de Toilette: Strength, Longevity and How to Choose
Walk into any fragrance shop and you will see bottles labelled eau de parfum, eau de toilette, cologne and more. The names look similar, but they describe how much fragrance oil is in the bottle, which affects strength, how long the scent lasts and often the price. This guide explains the differences and helps you choose one that suits you and your climate.
The main fragrance types
Perfumers dilute fragrance oil in alcohol (and sometimes water). The proportion of oil is the “concentration”. Exact percentages vary between brands, but these are the typical ranges:
- Parfum (extrait de parfum): the strongest, often about 20% to 30% or more fragrance oil. Rich, close to the skin and usually the longest lasting.
- Eau de parfum (EDP): typically about 15% to 20% oil. A popular balance of strength and longevity.
- Eau de toilette (EDT): typically about 5% to 15% oil. Lighter and fresher, and often a little cheaper.
- Eau de cologne (EDC): typically about 2% to 4% oil. Very light and refreshing, but it fades quickly.
- Body mist: the lightest, meant for a quick refresh through the day.
How long will it last?
As a general guide, an eau de parfum often lasts around four to eight hours on the skin, while an eau de toilette often lasts two to four. These are estimates, not promises. Longevity depends on the ingredients (base notes such as woods, resins and musks last longer than citrus), your skin, the weather and how you apply it. Very dry skin tends to absorb fragrance quickly, while moisturised skin holds it longer.
Understanding fragrance notes
Most perfumes are described in three layers:
- Top notes: the first impression, such as citrus or light fruit, which fades within minutes.
- Heart notes: the character of the fragrance, often flowers or spices, which appears as the top notes settle.
- Base notes: the lasting foundation, such as wood, amber, vanilla, musk or oud, which can linger for hours.
Oud (also called agarwood) is a dark, resinous wood used widely in Middle Eastern perfumery. It gives a rich, smoky, warm character, and fragrances built around it tend to be strong and long lasting.
Choosing for Nigerian weather
In hot, humid weather, heavy fragrances can feel overpowering, and heat can make scents seem stronger and turn them sooner. Fresh, citrus, aquatic and light floral scents in eau de toilette or lighter eau de parfum often feel more comfortable in the daytime. Richer, woody, spicy or oud-based fragrances suit evenings, cooler weather and special occasions. Use fewer sprays of a strong fragrance than you would of a light one.
How to test a fragrance properly
- Spray on your skin, not just a paper strip, because skin chemistry changes how a scent develops.
- Wait 20 to 30 minutes so you smell the heart and base notes, not only the opening.
- Test no more than two or three fragrances at a time, or your nose will tire.
- Do not rub your wrists together, because that can break down the top notes.
How to apply perfume
Apply to clean, moisturised skin at pulse points such as the wrists, the sides of the neck and behind the ears. Two to four sprays are enough for most fragrances. Spraying from a little distance spreads the scent evenly. Avoid spraying directly on delicate fabrics, which can stain, or on jewellery.
How to store it
Heat, light and air spoil fragrance. Keep bottles in a cool, dry place away from direct sun, and avoid bathrooms, where humidity and temperature swings speed up ageing. Keep the cap on. Stored well, many perfumes last for years.
Buying tips: get a genuine bottle
- Buy from a seller with a clear return policy and a real address.
- Check that the bottle, cap, label and box printing are clean and consistent, and that the batch code on the bottle matches the box.
- Be wary of prices far below those of established retailers.
- Ask about the exact size (for example 50ml or 100ml) and concentration, so you can compare like for like.
Summary
Choose eau de parfum for strength and longevity, eau de toilette for a lighter everyday scent, and test on your own skin before committing. Look after the bottle, and buy from a seller you trust.
